After 2 Whole Years

The first time I confirmed the Covid 19 virus arriving in the Philippines was around March 2020. The whole world changed as we know it. Malls were shut down, we became more health conscious, we were online almost 24/7, Zoom was the new meeting room, and we had more time in our hands than we ever realized.

There were both good and bad sides to the pandemic, with the good being that people started to spend more time with their family at home. People became more health conscious and focused on improving their habits. The bad side, on the other hand, was that people lost jobs, people became addicted to their glowing screens, some of the people we love have been taken from us, and try as we might, it was really hard to adjust to the restrictions of the new normal.

Now that we’re slowly getting back to normal with churches reopening, workers coming back to their offices, being able to travel again… After two whole years, how did Covid change us? What did we get out of it?

Was it just two years that should be shelved and forgotten as a horrible memory? How should we move on from the new normal that we got used to? Are we really a better person coming out of it, or have we gotten worse? Have we gotten closer to God? What did we learn after two years?

I believe we’ve all realized that there are really only a few things that matter when faced with the mortality of our own life: time, family, and God.

Have we been “numbering” our days as the Psalmist said, so we can gain a heart of wisdom? (Psalm 90:12). If not, I hope that we don’t waste away our time just because we’re home and have nothing to do. We know that we will be accountable for every single second that we spend on earth.

We don’t have to have the threat of death looming over us to take this word seriously. We don’t want to have to wait for the last days to do things for God – make things right, serve Him with all your might, honor Him with your treasures, and reach out to more people for Christ.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Ephesians 5:15-17

This has been a timeless message that still holds true to this day – Life is short. Live each day unto the Lord, as if you know He might come that day. Live with an eternal and not temporal mindset. Remember, only what’s done for Christ will last.

Covid, too, will pass. But what you do for the Lord will forever be written in the Book of Life.
